Islandmagee ladies in half-fare bus bid

A resolution was passed at the annual meeting of the Federation of Women’s Institutes in April 1961 calling for half-price bus fares for children.

The proposal was made by Mullaghdubh WI, seconded by Ballycarry and passed by a “huge majority”.

If successful, it would apply to children under 15 years of age.

In addition, students of any age who still attended school should be entitled to a five-day season ticket, according to the WI.

The meeting was presided over by the Duchess of Abercorn Viscountess Brookeborough at the YMCA premises at Wellington Hall, in Belfast.

Also on the agenda was the unhygienic condition of the “majority” of waiting rooms in Ulster’s railway and bus stations.
