Old rivals in final for first time

FOR the first time ever in 1983 the cricket teams from Lurgan and Waringstown met in a major cup final.

And it was Waringstown who came out on top when the two sides played in the John Player Cup final at Downpatrick.

A brilliant innings of 137 from Davy Dennison and 71 from captain Ivan Anderson helped the villagers make an impressive 303 for six in their first innings.

Lurgan responded with the respectable total of 233 and it could have been even better if star batsman Rahul Mankad had not been run out for 80.

Waringstown piled on the pressure in the second innings with a score of 230 for six with Charlie McCrum the top scorer on 59.

It left Lurgan with the massive task of making 301 to win and when they lost Mankad for just four runs it was all uphill for the town side.

Young Indian visitor Ronan Shah made 102 but Lurgan were all out for 208 and finished up 92 runs short.
