Semi finalists now known as the Morrison Cup nears its conclusion

Ballinrees caused a bit of a surprise this week with a good home win against St. Mary's in the quarter finals of the Morrison Cup.

It started well for the home team when Andrew Kelly took on Seamus Doherty with Kelly winning 12-5. Jonathan Kerr kept the momentum going for Ballinrees when he beat Declan McCann by 10 shots.

In the second half Kevin McNamee brought some solace to St. Mary’s with a 10-5 win over Noel Bradley (Ballinrees). However with Alistair Calvin (Ballinrees) holding David Gaile (St. Mary’s) to a 7-7 draw it’s Ballinrees who go through to the semi-final.

Finvoy Presbyterian are also through to the semi-final but they had to dig deep to oust First Coleraine by a single shot. Clifford McLernon put First Coleraine ahead with a 10-6 win against Chris Jones.

Bryan Shaw (Coleraine) and Adam Hunter (Finvoy) had a ding dong battle but Shaw held on to win by one shot. This left First Coleraine leading by five at the break. After the break Mark Jones (Finvoy) and Jim Campbell (Coleraine) ended up eight shots apiece. It was all down to the game between John Camac (Coleraine) and Joe Moore (Finvoy) to see who was going through. Although pressed the whole way Moore held on to win by six, just enough to put his team into the semis.

Loughanreagh played Dunloy Presbyterian at home and it was an easy win for the home team. Ian Ross (Loughanreagh) saw off William McCaughern (Dunloy) comfortably as did Nigel Gamble (Loughanreagh) in his game against Mark Shaw (Dunloy). It was a lot tighter in the second half when Alistair Steele (Loughanreagh) pipped Steven Dunlop (Dunloy) by one shot and Alan Irwin Loughanreagh) had to fight hard for his 8-3 win against Thomas Paul (Dunloy).

Boveedy entertained Dunluce in the last quarter final. In the first game Doughie Morrow (Boveedy) played Uel McKeeman with McKeeman winning by one shot. Ian Kerr beat Andrew Wallace (Boveedy) 10-6 to put the visitors five ahead at the break. Ashley McCahon (Boveedy) brought the scores level with a five shot win against Alistair Kirkpatrick (Dunluce). However Rodney Kane (Dunluce) kept a cool head and he beat Alan Catherwood easily to put Dunluce into the semi-final.

The draw for the semi-finals is: Ballinrees v Finvoy Pres; Loughanreagh v Dunluce. Ties to be played before as soon as possible.
