Three defeats for hockey club

The hockey season is coming to a rather disappointing end all round for Larne Ladies. The 1st XI met Lisnagarvey in midweek and were given a lesson in the importance of keeping possession.

Gillian Rennix opened the scoring for Larne with a lovely shot into the roof of the ‘Garvey net, but after that it was downhill for the next 20 minutes as Garvey notched five goals to give them a very comfortable half-time lead.

Larne played considerably better in the second half, but ‘Garvey still managed to score again to give them a 6-1 victory.

Larne went into the game having had a long lay-off due to weather problems with games elsewhere in Plate and Cup competitions making it difficult to get league fixtures completed.

On a positive note, Larne have managed to retain their Senior One status, and after a rest will start pre-season in July and be ready to hit the ground running come September.

Larne: T Neill, R Dalton, G Russell, L Craig, L Snoddy, M Finlay, G Rennix, R Dalton (c), I Carmichael, J Spence, A Beggs, C McIlwaine, K McIlwaine. Coach: A. King

The club’s 3rd XI travelled to Ballymena for a league fixture with little hope of a win. A number of people were unavailable but with the team are sitting at the top of the table, the club did not want to concede and forfeit the points. With just nine players on the pitch, the team put everything into it and although Ballymena scored three goals in the first half, they were able to hold out for a scoreless second half and can be pleased with their performance. The Under-15s had a difficult game on Sunday against a well-drilled Lisnagarvey junior team. In truth, they were outplayed and it took them until the second half to get into their stride. They came close to scoring on several occasions, but it was too little too late.

This squad will have another year together and over half of them will be of an age to play for the senior teams which will undoubtedly improve their match experience, so they can look forward to a better season next year.
