Tony takes home the turkey at Rathmore

SIX birds were up for grabs at Rathmore Golf Club on Sunday and the close scoring would indicate a hungry membership! Almost 100 entered the competition and Tony McAuley got the first grip of the tail feathers with his 40 points haul.

Playing off 10, Tony carded an average enough 18 points out but turned on the power coming back when he added two birdies, a two at the fifteenth and a three at the sixteenth, to add 22 points to win on countback from Godfrey Clarke, the other 40 pointer.

Godfrey, also playing off 10, made up for a six at the second with a birdie two at the sixth and grabbed 18 points out. Again the back nine proved more profitable as Godfrey, while adding a double bogey at the par four fourteenth, birdied the par three fifteenth. No other shots were dropped on this nine and he added 22 points for a total of 40.

A third bird went to Paul Elliott (9) for his effort of 39 points. A good, consistently steady round from Paul with a double bogey six at the opening hole being the low point, and consecutive birdies at 16 and 17, both par fours. Countback separated Paul from Alan McCarthy who used his 21 shots to good effect in another steady round with only a couple of double bogeys to complain about.

Two 38s took the final turkeys and these went to John Thompson and Benny Workman. John (25) had a double and triple bogey at two and four respectively and then blanked the sixth hole but recovered well to pick up 17 points out.

Better form on the return leg saw him add 21 points which was a good enough return to push Benny into the final spot. Two balanced nines of 19 points each and a blank hole each gave 17 handicap Benny his prize. The par five fourteenth was birdied as was the par three fifteenth - the highlights of Benny’s round.
