Weir hat-trick as Parkview eye play-off spot

A SUZI Weir hat-trick was the highlight of Parkview Ladies' 5-0 rout against PSNI.

This emphatic midweek win at Foundry Lane virtually assured the Doagh girls of a Senior Three runners-up finish behind champions Rainey.

Commenting on the side's league placing, team captain Clare Dundee said: "Rainey have been confirmed Senior Three champions and will take the one automatic promotion place.

"With two fixtures to play we are still in second spot, with our only danger coming from Limavady, but the ball is in our court and we are quietly confident of being involved in the play-off against either Kilkeel or Raphoe."

With Angela Halaseh, Gail Caldwell, Laura Neish and Weir dominant in midfield, Parkview were on top throughout. After turning round two up, they added three more without reply in the second session.

Weir opened the scoring with a firm strike from the top of the circle from a Neish penalty-corner, but PSNI responded with a series of attacks that stretched the home defence.

Crisp tackling by Laura Chalmers and Lynne Stephens limited goalkeeper Sharon Gaffney's efforts to a couple of blocks, but play was generally at the opposite end, where the Neish - Weir combination paid off on a penalty-corner, with Weir doubling her tally.

It was mostly one-way traffic in the second half after Claire Patterson drilled in number three from a Nikki Turkington pass.

Stephens and Crawford brought the ball forward for Weir to complete her hat-trick, and it was left to Patterson to complete the rout when she collected from Neish to score from close range.

Despite some determined efforts in the final 10 minutes, the visitors were unable to prevent the whitewash, with Gaffney pulling off two fine saves.
